New Music: Blood Orange honors Black History Month with two new songs

“U must luv yourself.”

Back in October, Dev Hynes said his new album, under his musical moniker Blood Orange, was “78% done.”

To hold us over until then, and to honor Black History Month, he’s dropped two tracks on SoundCloud—neither of which will appear on his next album, according to the singer.

In a caption posted to Instagram, Hynes wrote: “U must luv yourself[.] Happy Black History Month. (All year).”

“Christopher & 6th,” which could reference an intersection in New York’s Greenwich Village, is a lo-fi ballad driven by a guitar. Hynes’ vocals are enveloped by echoes, chatter, laughter, and more sounds of his surroundings. He sings: “When he took your hand when you were scared / Stroked your thigh while you were weak / Can you flex while with another man? / Society says don’t you speak.”

On “June 12th,” Hynes delivers spoken word about self-love and authenticity over a looped drum beat.
