As a direct result of Colin Kaepernick’s efforts to direct more attention on police brutality, professional sports over the last couple of years have increasingly become a platform for making political statements.

On this week’s Drink Champs, airing Thursday (January 25) at 10 p.m. ET, retired NBA legend Baron Davis offers his thoughts on how to combat the violence involving officers of the law that has been plaguing many communities for too long.

“Let’s educate these kids,” Baron Davis told N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN. “Educate them to grow up to want to be policemen in their community. If you grow up and one of your best friends from elementary school is a policeman, [you respect them more because] I know your story.”

According to the former Golden State Warrior, the lack of familiarity among police and those being policed, especially in Black communities, is what helps widen the divide between them. “Now when he runs into you, it’s a whole confrontation thing because he don’t know you and you don’t know him,” he says.

This week’s episode also features Davis speaking on the NBA getting soft and life after basketball.
