Continuing an annual tradition several years old, the Blackout for Human Rights founded by filmmakers Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) and Ava DuVernay(Selma) will host its MLK Now event in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 15. View the live-stream below.
From 2 p.m. till 6 p.m. ET, Blackout for Human Rights will host its third annual MLK Now event at the Riverside Church in New York. The community celebration is hosted in partnership with the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA), Color of Change, PICO National Network and The Root.
Performers and thought leaders at MLK Now 2018 include Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’o, The Roots’ Black Thought, NBA legend Allan Houston, activist/journalist Rosa Clemente, political strategist and commentator Symone D. Sanders, Women’s March National Co-Chair Carmen Perez, MC/activist Tef Poe, and more. Comedian/author Baratunde Thurston and comedian/writer Akilah Hughes will co-host the event.
Blackout for Human Rights is “a network of concerned artists, activists, filmmakers, musicians and citizens who committed their energy and resources to immediately address the staggering level of human rights violations against fellow Americans throughout the United States,” according to its website. Along with the previous MLK Now events, the organization also organized the #JusticeForFlint fundraiser event to combat the water crisis in Flint, Mich. in 2016. The event, which REVOLT exclusively live-streamed, raised $156,000.
