Monday (Jan. 15), on what would be the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 89th birthday, the nation will be honoring the late Civil Rights leader and the legacy he left behind.

From 2-6PM ET, Blackout for Human Rights will host its third-annual MLK Now event, celebrating the words and work of King, with the event set to take place at the Riverside Church in New York. The community celebration, which is hosted in partnership with the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA), Color of Change, PICO National Network and The Root, will also be livestreamed for those unable to physically attend the now-sold out event.

As announced by the organization, a variety of artists, performers and thought-leaders are set to participate and pay homage to the late minister and activist, including Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’o, The Roots’ Black Thought, NBA legend Allan Houston, activist/journalist Rosa Clemente, political strategist and commentator Symone D. Sanders, Women’s March National Co-Chair Carmen Perez and MC/activist Tef Poe, among others, with comedian/author Baratunde Thurston set to host alongside comedian/writer Akilah Hughes.

While over half a century has passed since King was assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968, his undeniable influence continues to inspire the unwavering fight against injustice and inequality, with many using the national holiday to both commemorate King’s life and reflect on the work that has yet to be done.

MLK Now 2018’s full program will be livestreamed here via Riverside Church and The Root.
