Five years ago, on November 27, long before she had A Seat at the Table, Solange dropped her first EP: True. The seven-song project blended alternative soul, pop, electronica and retro sounds, and established her as, well, a true trendsetting artist. And today, she celebrated its anniversary by taking to Instagram to pen a tribute. The singer listed the EP’s impact on her memories of identity, heartbreak, joy, “freedom and fear,” her friendship with Dev Hynes, and more. She thanked her fans, husband Alan Ferguson, former manager Imogene Strauss, Roc Nation’s Rich Kleiman, engineers Mikaelin Bluespruce and Rommel Nino Villanueva, her label Terrible Records, and artist Mickalene Thomas. Read her tribute below.
“this lil baby turned 5: “True” Ep ill always hold it close to my heart. it will always remind me of a time of freedom and fear. it will always remind me of waking up real early, rolling over, and laying an idea down. it will always remind me of a time of kinship and magic making with my brother dev in such sacred special moments. it will always remind me of a time of confronting my identity while still working it out in front of the world. it will always remind me of the ride or dies who’ve come along and allowed me the space for every part of my evolution… it will always remind me of heartbreak and joy, real joy, and real heartbreak falling in and out of love w myself and friends and notions and ideas and really just growing the fuck up. i thank you guys who allowed me to do that and I will never take for granted how you make/made me feel❤️ love u @devhynes and @imogene and @richkleiman and @mixedbyblue and @audio____nino @terriblerecords and @mickalenethomas for this moment in time and thank you to a ferg for never letting me down #true.”
