Post Malone recently found himself trending for all the wrong reasons after advising fans “if you’re looking to think about life, don’t listen to hip-hop.”

He then continued on, explaining in a now-viral interview, “There’s great hip-hop songs where they talk about life and they really spit that real s—t, but right now, you know, there’s not a lot of people talking about s—t. Whenever I wanna cry, whenever I wanna sit down and have a nice cry, I’ll listen to some, like, Bob Dylan.”

After the interview with Newonce aired, many took to social media to express their distaste for Post, calling out the rapper for appropriating hip-hop culture and abandoning it once he became successful a la Miley Cyrus.

Naturally, Post got wind of the backlash, taking to Twitter in a filmed video clip of himself talking to address his infamous commentary.

“Apparently there’s a lot of people saying that I don’t appreciate hip-hop or that hip-hop has never made me feel anything, and I’m referencing this interview that I did in Poland while I was on the European tour,” Post began, while casually smoking a cigarette. “It was a beer-tasting interview, so they put a lot of beer in my face and asked me what kind of beer tastes good to me, so you know, knowing me, I drank it. And apparently I said that whenever you wanna feel something, don’t listen to hip-hop. And it’s funny because who the f—k am I to tell you don’t listen to this and whenever you wanna feel something don’t listen to this? Or who am I to tell you that you should feel a certain way when listening to something?”

He then goes on to say that his commentary was a reflection of his personal music preferences and that his own genre-spanning tastes don’t take away from his appreciation for hip-hop.

“A lot of people saying that I don’t appreciate hip-hop, or I’m taking advantage of hip-hip,” he continued. “My last hip-hop album was f—king hip-hop. My next hip-hop album is f—king hip-hop. I love hip-hop. I make hip-hop. I wanna take this genre and stretch it so far that people who may not listen to it, listen to it, and wanna listen to the new artists and whatever’s going on.”

He then points out that he’s only 22 years old and regardless of what people think, he’s still going to continue doing his thing.

“What I was trying to say is that a lot of people, except for a handful of artists, are saying the same s—t, they’re not saying anything super meaningful,” Post concluded. “And I’m 22 years old: I’ve not had all the life experience in the world to talk about the most meaningful s—t. I just sing about what I have gone through, what’s going on in my life, and what I want to sing about. Never once did I say that I don’t appreciate hip-hop, I’m just trying to keep living and make the music that I love. Thank you.”

Regardless of the fact that reactions to Post’s latest commentary have been split across the board, his new music video for his 21 Savage-assisted “rockstar” impressively has hit over 12 million views in the two days since its release.
