Over the weekend, both Cardi B and J. Cole performed at 92.3’s annual “Real Show” in Los Angeles where the two crossed paths backstage and had a conversation that resulted in Cole passing along words of encouragement to Cardi. They were words she promised to heed, according to an Instagram post she shared yesterday (November 19).
Under a photo of the two MCs, Cardi wrote: “i shall follow advice !!”
Now we’re getting some insight into exactly what Cole advised Cardi as a video of their chat has since surfaced online.
In the clip, Cole can be seen trying to relieve Cardi of the pressure she’s publicly admitted to feeling to deliver her debut album and top the success of “Bodak Yellow.”
J. Cole tells her, “Nobody don’t hit No. 1. Don’t try to do it twice. Fuck that. JAY-Z’s first No. 1 record was, what, three years ago? The ‘New York’ record. JAY-Z been poppin’ since ’96. The nigga just got his first No. 1.” (He was presumably referring to JAY’s “Empire State of Mind” from 2009.)
He continued, addressing her recent visit to Breakfast Club, saying: “I already know. When I seen the interview, I’m like, ‘Yo, she in her own head.’ Like. you might like some shit, but then you start overthinking it.”
Cardi agreed: “Yup! Over-frying the brain. You can’t help it!”
This isn’t the first time Cole has encouraged her to drop her official LP. Back in September, he broke his Twitter silence to weigh in on NFL protests and Colin Kaepernick’s #TakeAKnee movement, but also addressed Cardi, writing, “Cardi b I seen your breakfast club interview, loved it. Don’t put all that pressure on your album. You already won. Just drop & repeat.”
Still, Cardi B admitted on Twitter yesterday that, despite the advice, “I’m going to take my time till it’s right.”
