Earlier this afternoon, on Halloween (Oct. 31), a driver of a rental truck plowed into a group of people on a bike path near the World Trade Center in New York City, with the act declared by police as an “act of terror.”
According to CNN, after crashing the Home Depot-issued rental truck into a school bus, the suspect then exited the vehicle carrying imitation firearms. He was shot in the abdomen by police and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The suspect is a 29-year-old male and has been identified as Sayfullo Saipov, from Tampa, Florida.
According to reports, witnesses shared that the suspect was yelling, “Allahu Akbar,” which translates to “Allah is the greatest” in Arabic, during the time of the attack. The incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
Many took to social media to share words of confusion and concern regarding the incident, with graphic video footage later surfacing online.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation, and as pointed out by New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill, the statements made by the driver and the method of the attack are consistent with other terrorist attacks.
“This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a press conference.
According to officials, a pellet gun and a paintball gun were recovered from the scene.
Six people were declared dead at the scene, with two later being pronounced dead at the hospital. 11 others were transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
At this time, no other suspects are being sought.
Donald Trump was quick to respond, writing on Twitter, “In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!”
