The year of Cardi B has been one for the 2017 books. Between eclipsing pop titans like Taylor Swift from the top of the pop charts with her single “Bodak Yellow” and recently getting engaged with boyfriend (now fiancé) Offset, the Bronx rapper is enjoying the hottest breakout in recent memory. Adding another checkpoint in her run, Cardi covers Rolling Stone this month, fitting for the publication’s “Hot Issue.”

Is Cardi B the hottest MC in New York City?

To hear her tell it, even with the success as a white-hot superstar, the “Bodak Yellow” star is feeling the pressure as expectations for a debut album grows bigger. “It’s not as fun to do music, my mind doesn’t flow as free ’cause I have so much on my mind,” she mentioned while admitting that it has become harder to create music these days. “It’s so sad to say, and I don’t want to be the one to say it, but you gotta follow the trend. This generation loves to get high. They love to be on drugs. This is why they on that shit: They don’t want to think about what you’re saying.”

As far as her debut album, Cardi says that although she has “six, seven solid songs,” things could change. “I got six, seven solid songs that I like, but I wonder if a month from now, I’m going to change my mind.” This aggravating process is what inspired fellow rappers like J. Cole to advise the rapper to take her time. “Don’t put all that pressure on your album,” he wrote. “You already won. Just drop & repeat”

The story provides an in-depth look at Cardi, picking up pieces from her past through the present to, in the end, provide a glimpse of the future. “I’m not a YOLO person. I think 25 years from now. I think about my future kids, future husband, future house,” she pondered when asked about the life she sees going forward.
