In the late 1980s, musician Teddy Riley changed R&B and hip-hop forever by creating a new musical genre. And on this day 30 years ago, that sound was officially given a name: new jack swing.

On Oct. 18, 1987, music journalist Barry Michael Cooper coined the term “new jack swing” in a cover story he wrote about Teddy Riley for the Village Voice. The headline: “Teddy Riley’s New Jack Swing: Harlem Gangsters Raise a Genius.”

Cooper’s profile told the story of Riley’s rise, and explained his creation – a style that was the first to begin to truly mix hip-hop and R&B together to create something new.
