In the late 1980s, musician Teddy Riley changed R&B and hip-hop forever by creating a new musical genre. And on this day 30 years ago, that sound was officially given a name: new jack swing.
On Oct. 18, 1987, music journalist Barry Michael Cooper coined the term “new jack swing” in a cover story he wrote about Teddy Riley for the Village Voice. The headline: “Teddy Riley’s New Jack Swing: Harlem Gangsters Raise a Genius.”
Cooper’s profile told the story of Riley’s rise, and explained his creation – a style that was the first to begin to truly mix hip-hop and R&B together to create something new.
REVOLT TV doesn’t have Barry Michael Cooper, but we have something special cooked up that will pay homage to new jack swing by chronicling its birth, growth, and how it continues to impact black music decades later.
Stay tuned to REVOLT.TV for more on Monday, Oct. 23. Get a sneak peek below.
