It’s been a long time coming for Kelela’s debut album Take Me Apart. And the pay-off is grand.
Back in 2013, the singer released her Cut 4 Me mixtape and followed it up with 2015’s Hallucinogen EP, which would go on to spawn fan-favorite “Rewind.” Over those same years, she’d receive the first of many stamp of approvals from Solange, who recruited her to appear on two tracks from Solo’s record label compilation album Saint Heron (“Go All Night,” “Bankhead”), one from her acclaimed LP A Seat at the Table (“Scales”), and then as an opener at her recent ‘Cosmic Journey’ concert at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl—the show that brought Solange back to Twitter.
Kelela’s been handpicked by Danny Brown, the Gorillaz, and Clams Casino as a featured guest on their respective recent efforts; joined The xx on tour; earned a spot on JAY-Z and Beyonce’s anniversary playlist; performed at this year’s Made In America festival; and was named one of the top women in R&B by Kelly Rowland.
Now, following the release of its first single, the shimmery and synthy “LMK,” Take Me Apart has arrived. Listen below.
