DeVon Franklin has built a career as a jack of many trades. The Hollywood producer, preacher, motivational speaker and author’s latest project is his recently released his book, The Hollywood Commandments: A Spiritual Guide to Secular Success, which he stopped by The Breakfast Club to speak on.

When discussing his newly released book and how he came to write it, the mastermind behind best-sellers like Produced By Faith and The Wait, said, “I really wanted to write a book to show that no matter what industry you’re in, no matter what you do, you can hold on to who you are and become successful.”

The renowned preacher also spoke on how he was warned to stay away from the glitz and glam of the entertainment business if he wanted to stay committed to his faith. “As a Christian growing up, people said, ‘You can’t go to Hollywood. You can’t make it. That is going to be a place that is not only going to take your faith, but change who you are,’” said Franklin, who obviously didn’t take the advice. “I didn’t believe that.”

Franklin also spoke about his journey from intern to Hollywood power player, sharing a life lesson he learned almost 20 years ago while interning for Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment. The husband of actress Meagan Good observed in those early career days that in many cases when people aim to get close to the those in positions of power they subsequently overlook the people who work under them. “It’s just a matter of principle and character, why not treat everybody as the same?”
