In August 2016, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs opened Harlem’s Capital Preparatory, his charter school aimed to provide disadvantaged students with the college and career readiness skills needed to become responsible citizens.
On Monday (September 18) Diddy appeared on Steve Harvey’s show Steve show to surprise a few of his students.
Teacher Erica Buddington – the same instructor who went viral after using Cardi B’s hit “Bodak Yellow” in her lesson plans – reached out to the children’s parents to inform them of her plan to meet their school’s co-founder. “They kept their word and two weeks later, as the sun rose, I told the children that we were headed to California,” she posted on Instagram.
Once the students and their parents arrived at their Los Angeles hotel, Buddington told the children that they would be guests on Steve Harvey’s daytime talk show, where to their surprise they would meet Combs himself.
“A day later, one of their school founders, Sean “Diddy” Combs, arrived on set,” said Buddington. “We spent the day in a green room, playing board games, becoming closer and hanging with our humble school founder. My scholars are so full. This is all that matters to me.”
Not only did Mr. Combs surprise the children with a visit, he also donated an additional $20,000, on top of the millions he invested into opening the school.
The students and their parents took to social media to thank Mr. Combs for his contribution to their future.
“I am grateful to Diddy and so proud to have my daughter as part of his legacy in Black Excellence,” said Tyree Farrell-Artis, the mother of Heaven, one of the young students on the show.
