Sampha stepped out of the shadows earlier this year, with his 2017 debut album Process. The album, which dropped in February 2017, signified his long-awaited transition from behind-the-scenes guest vocalist and songwriter into a full-fledged recording artist in his own right.
The British singer-songwriter, previously best known for his collaborative work with Drake, Kanye West, Solange and more, has not only impressed critics with his first-ever solo project but also has been awarded one of the UK’s most prestigious awards.
Sampha has officially been presented with the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize, a coveted award honoring the best British album of the past year. Following a slew of performances by the nominated acts, actor Idris Elba had the pleasure of introducing the 28-year-old and happily presenting him with the £25,000 prize.
The fast-rising musician beat out albums by the xx, Stormzy, Alt-J, Ed Sheeran, J Hus, Glass Animals and more, with the crowd in attendance at the ceremony absolutely erupting into cheers following the anticipated reveal of this year’s award winner. Previous winners include acts such as James Blake, the Arctic Monkeys, the xx and Portishead. Many congrats to you, Sampha!
