With Alessia Cara and Khalid in tow, not to mention a very poignant speech delivered by Kesha prior, Logic’s live-saving anthem “1-800-273-8255” may have been the most important moment of the night at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Bringing the Everybody single to life alongside an orchestra, the trio moved the audience, through song and stage performance, as about 50 attempt survivors from the Los Angeles area stood onstage wearing shirts that featured the phone number to the suicide prevention hotline along with the following message: “you are not alone.”
Not a dry eye appeared to be left after the stirring set. By the end, Logic closed things out with a powerful sermon, thanking MTV for giving him a platform to speak on reality. “I just want to thank you all for giving me a platform to talk about mental health suicide an depression,” he said. “I don’t give a damn if you’re black white or any color in between, I’m going to fight for your equality.” The powerful performance was met with a standing ovation.
The performance comes as Logic experiences the most successful year of his career. His latest album, Everybody, earned the rapper his first ever No. 1 album and the ear of the masses with his Top 40 statement record “1-800-273-8255.”
