Last week on “Drink Champs” with hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, guest LL Cool J gave his account of the famous beef between him and Canibus. This week’s episode which airs tonight (August 3) at 10 p.m. EST on REVOLT, Wyclef Jean gives his side of the story.
LL Cool J tells “Drink Champs” he pitched Canibus with a new song before their beef boiled over
Clef, who had Canibus signed to his Refugee imprint at the time of the battle 20 years ago and produced “Second Round K.O.,” says he told his protégé facing off against Cool J was going to be an uphill battle.
“The whole record was Sun Tzu ‘The Art of War,’” Clef said of “Second Round K.O.”
“Who won [the battle] to me? That would start off with the conversation I had with Canibus. The conversation I had with Canibus was, ‘If you really wanna go this route, there’s a few things I have to let you know that’s going to happen and you have to be ready.’ At the end of day it’s chess. I’m a fighter and Canibus is a young bull. So at the end of the day, my job is to give him information. I’m really the Haitian Frank Sinatra.
“At the end of the day,” he continued, “as a Caribbean man, if someone from the Caribbean comes to me with a issue, I’m going to address it, but I’m going to ask how you wanna deal with it?”
Of course Canibus kept it music.
While Canibus is one artist who Wyclef worked with whose career never took off, the Haitian legend has worked with a plethora of superstars. Tune in tonight to “Drink Champs” to see the Fugees member discuss collaborating with Shakira, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana and even his longtime friend Akon, who used to be Clef’s barber.
