Back in 2013, Quincy Jones filed a lawsuit against Michael Jackson’s MJJ Productions, a company controlled by the late singer’s estate, claiming he was owed $30 million in royalty payments after the King of Pop died in 2009. The estate then countered the claim and said the music producer was actually due $392,000 because of minor accounting errors. Now, following a decision by a Los Angeles courtroom, Jones has been awarded $9.4 million in the trial against Jackson’s estate.

Jones, 84, was awarded the sum in damages after it was established that he had been underpaid in royalties for use of music featured in the posthumous Jackson film “This Is It” and Cirque du Soleil shows. “This lawsuit was never about Michael,” Jones said in a statement. “It was about protecting the integrity of the work we all did in the recording studio and the legacy of what we created.”

Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for the MJ estate, said the following in a statement, “Although Mr. Jones is portraying this as a victory for artists’ rights, the real artist is Michael Jackson and it is his money Mr. Jones is seeking.”

Jones worked with Jackson on the monumental albums Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad.
