Toronto singer on-the-rise Jessie Reyez has released a heartbreaking short film in conjunction with her recently-released single “Gatekeeper.” While the song is powerful on its own, the film’s visuals show a more in-depth look into the darker side of the music industry.

The story, written by Reyez, focuses on a night she experienced a few years ago during which she endured an unpleasant experience with a male industry heavy-hitter. In the film, she reveals that the man tried to pressure her into having sex with him in order to help her career.

What started out as a playful night ended as a horrible situation, one that brought Reyez to a standstill: Either sexually please the “gatekeeper” to receive the keys to a successful career or to reject his advances and “fail,” according to him.
