It’s been about two years since Kendrick Lamar wowed critics with To Pimp A Butterfly, his seminal 2015 LP, but that hasn’t stopped the accolades from pouring in.
As unveiled by 9th Wonder, who has been tasked with curating the institution’s Classic Crates project with HARI, K. Dot’s Butterfly will join the collection of coveted releases that also includes Nas’ Illmatic, A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory, and Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Beginning this year, 10 albums will be achieved into the university’s collection each year and the project is aimed to feature 200 albums in total. “I chose the research project “These Are The Breaks,” a collection of albums that are the standard of the culture,” wrote 9th Wonder in an Instagram post. As for the selections of Butterfly, Low End Theory, Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and Illmatic as the starting four, the producer said, “These are the first four we chose to start with to live for forever in the Harvard Library and to be forever placed in the canon complete with liner notes and the vinyl that was used in the production of the album.”
