First things first, live televised musical performances are typically a call for disaster — especially when its being broadcasted live from Times Square in New York City for the annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Showcase. All that said, Mariah Carey, who has unfortunately suffered a couple live bungles in the past, experienced the setback during her set last night (December 31) after a performance of “Auld Lang Syne” — the traditional folk song used to say sayonara to one year and hello to the next — quickly went downhill.
Things went from awry to awkward when the singer’s mouth appeared to be out of sync with the accompanying vocals. Then when it was time to perform her latest single “Emotion,” instead of singing along, she complained about technical difficulties, expressed annoyance with her dancers on stage, and noted to the millions in Times Square that she “can’t hear” and that they “didn’t have a check for this song, so we’ll just say it went to number one… I’m going to say let the audience sing.” If that wasn’t enough, Carey concluded her performance by providing the best quote to describe 2016: “It just don’t get any better.”
The performance didn’t take long to enter the court of social media opinion, quickly becoming the top trending subject of the night.
But the best commentary came from the lauded diva herself.
