What began with a descending escalator in a hotel that bears his name will end in the Oval Office: Republican candidate Donald Trump has won the 2016 Presidential election and will be our 45th Commander-In-Chief. This news has shocked the world, and speaks directly to the desires of working class white voters who have felt left behind by years of globalization and technological automation that has taken many industrial jobs.

Trump’s success is historic, as the first business-man-turned-reality TV star ever to win the highest office, and his win is revolutionary in that he openly defied the Republican establishment as well as most conventional rules of political discourse. Each week seemed to bring a new scandal or controversy created by his off-the-cuff, unapologetic rhetorical style, each one seeming like it may well have been his undoing. But, it never was.

Instead, Trump’s victory as a nationalistic candidate despite his many setbacks, and his language that has fostered divisions along racial, cultural, and gender-based lines, demonstrates just how deeply he tapped into a powder keg of anger about the state of the nation, and its mistrust of Hillary Clinton. As a candidate, you never knew what Trump was going to say. His Presidency poses a similar sort of suspense.
