It’s easy to dismiss Growing Up Hip Hop as a show about spoiled rich kids, but REVOLT got a sneak peek of Season 2 and the chance to hear from the stars themselves at the New York City premiere. The first episode centered largely on the cast finding out secondhand that their friend Angela Simmons was not only pregnant, but engaged.
The reality show features Romeo Miller (son of Master P), Angela Simmons (daughter of Rev Run), Damon “Boogie” Dash (son of Dame Dash), Egypt Criss (daughter of Treach from Naughty By Nature and Pepa of Salt N Pepa) and El DeBarge’s niece, Kristina DeBarge. Their famous parents make cameos as well, as much of the show depicts the young adults grappling with whether to take the paths their parents want for them, or to make their own way.
During a roundtable moderated by Hot 97’s Angela Yee, the discussion turned to Egypt and her desire to pursue a singing career instead of going to college, which is what her mom wants. Yee had the cast give advice to Egypt, whom they lovingly view as their shared kid sister.
“I had the biggest show on Nickelodeon when I went. In college, you can grow up; it’s the real world in a bubble,” Romeo said. “It was a good decision for me. It had a lot to do with me growing up and maturing as a man.”
Watch our interview with Master P, who appears on Growing Up Hip Hop, on how he raised grounded children despite their family’s fame and fortune.
Growing Up Hip Hop returns for Season 2 on Thursday (October 13) on WE TV.
