The family of Sandra Bland has reached a $1.9 million settlement in its federal wrongful death lawsuit, their attorney said Thursday (September 15).
The settlement includes compensation for Bland’s death as well as changes to jail procedures in Waller County, Texas. Any laws that result from the efforts will have to be named after Bland. Bland, 28, was found dead in her jail cell three days after she was arrested for during a traffic stop in July 2015.
Her mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, told BuzzFeed News, “After talking to moms across the country, this is what we’ve been looking for. This is monumental. This is not just about me.”
