Tink, “Show It”

Rejoice! Chicago rapper/singer Tink released her latest mixtape, Winter’s Diary 4, today, and I can’t make it past song No. 3, “Show It.” Part journal entry, part therapy, it’s the frustration every woman has experienced when her relationship is hitting a rough patch, but instead of communicating and trying to work it out, her partner just shuts down. “We’re going through a phase, I don’t recognize your face anymore / You hate it when I cry, but you never ask me why.” That’s it, girl. King Krule, “FEEL SAFE 88”

I remember first hearing of King Krule years ago, the only qualifier being that his voice didn’t match his look. That still holds true. But apparently his name no longer does. He’s released this track, “FEEL SAFE 88,” under the new moniker The Return of Pimp Shrimp. But none of that really matters when he’s delivering this fuzzy and hypnotic downtempo groove. With shrill synths, electric piano, and his cartoonishly deep vocals, this is for your end-of-the-night haziness.—Danielle Cheesman

ThiDaniel, “Purple”

I don’t know much about ThiDaniel, but I know a Tricky Stewart co-sign is worth something; this is the man that did “Umbrella” and “Single Ladies,” so I’m on-board. On “Purple,” what starts off with minimal instrumentation soon picks up with a rattle on a drum and the fast-paced riff of an electric guitar for what becomes one of the sunniest funk-driven rhythms I’ve heard since “Get Lucky.” Also, I didn’t think anyone could make the onomatopoeia of “skrt, skrt” sound sweet or melodic, but ThiDaniel manages to pull it off.—D.C.
