Many of you are getting hip to Denzel Curry’s wave since he claimed one of the coveted spots on XXL‘s Freshman Class cover, but the Florida MC represents more than meets the eye.
Curry, who grew up listening to Already Rugged, Big L and MF Doom, and draws on Southern influences from his older brothers’ picks like Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane, has a unique perspective on life and is the unicorn of his region. He developed his flow from watching Outkast DVDs as a kid and connecting to Three 6 Mafia‘s Lord Infamous’ style from during his high school years.
REVOLT recently met with Curry to discuss his new music, views on police injustice, Black Metal Terrorist tour, the bond he shares with Allan Kingdom and tourmate Boogie (both of whom appear on his latest single “Today”), and what separates him from living the D-boy lifestyle that Miami is known for.
Curry said, “It has to be more truth than fiction. I had to talk about what’s going on with this flow. You know Miami is built off drugs. Most of the people that come out of there are street niggas. Me, I’m not particularly a street nigga. I’m not a gangster but I’m not a bitch either. So I talked about what I went through.”
