Miguel, “Cadillac”
When the soundtrack for “The Get Down” was detailed earlier this week there was absolutely no mention of Miguel appearing on it. How dare they! There’s a blunt strumming that keeps the beat like a metronome, funky upbeat horns, a string crescendo so steep it sounds like a siren and fuzzy reverberation, all before Miguel hits us with a falsetto that’ll make you do a double-take. Pharrell, is that you? Leave it to Miguel to so authentically match the music to the era. The chorus is nothing more than “Heaven’s in the back seat of my Cadillac/ Let me take you there,” so you get the picture. But it’s the last minute-and-a-half, when the song breaks from its structure for a sexy and hazy sax solo, that you must hear.—Danielle Cheesman
E-40, “Petty” Feat. Kamaiyah
“Most of these bitches is petty.” You can never truly avoid pettiness, whether it is in your personal life or in business. And both E-40 and Kamaiyah take note of this in their new song. The Bay Area duo brought both of their unique flows to the table, delivering a solid track off of E-40’s upcoming double album The D-Boy Diary: Book 1 & 2.—Erin Ashley Simon
Caleborate, “Options” Feat. Pell & Sylvan Lacue
Listeners are gifted with several music style, well, options while listening to Caleborate’s latest single of the same name. You either get witty wordplay from the Berkeley rapper, swaggy verses from Pell, or harmonious fill-ins by Sylvan Lacue. With each delivery distinct but merged together, they don’t feel or seem like separate entities. Don’t believe me? Listen for yourself.—E.A.S.
