Miguel, “Cadillac”

When the soundtrack for “The Get Down” was detailed earlier this week there was absolutely no mention of Miguel appearing on it. How dare they! There’s a blunt strumming that keeps the beat like a metronome, funky upbeat horns, a string crescendo so steep it sounds like a siren and fuzzy reverberation, all before Miguel hits us with a falsetto that’ll make you do a double-take. Pharrell, is that you? Leave it to Miguel to so authentically match the music to the era. The chorus is nothing more than “Heaven’s in the back seat of my Cadillac/ Let me take you there,” so you get the picture. But it’s the last minute-and-a-half, when the song breaks from its structure for a sexy and hazy sax solo, that you must hear.—Danielle Cheesman
