It may not have been intentional, but Will Smith did a great job of distracting audiences away from the growing negative reception to “Suicide Squad.” As the film is set to premiere nationwide this Friday (August 5), Smith appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and waxed nostalgia with a “groove slightly transformed, just a bit of a break from the norm.” During the commercial break, Colbert’s band lined up the instrumental to the timeless ultimate song of the summer, “Summertime.” Of course this prompted Smith to grab the mic and lead the crowd into the groove that soothes and moves romance.

While his appearance on the talk show was to promote “Suicide Squad,” which finds the actor starring as the fictional antihero Deadshot, Smith also blessed the house with a glimpse of his former days as the Fresh Prince. Interestingly enough, his performance of “Summertime” happens to fall in line with the record’s 25th anniversary. The single, which released in 1991 on DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s hit album Homebase, sampled a 1975 Kool & the Gang B-side (“Summer Madness”) and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Smith performing the record sure brought along some nostalgic bliss. For 25 summers now, that groove has been a standard. While “Suicide Squad” has been already hit with villainy reviews, this performance, albeit a short tease, adds a little icing over it all. Sort of.
