JoJo, “Fuck Apologies” Feat. Wiz Khalifa
JoJo gets an assist from Wiz Khalifa on this track, a pop/hip-hop mash-up that’s just a touch more pop thanks to a plucky guitar riff. Since her debut as a teen, she’s always come across as a girl trying to be “fast,” as the old folks say. She’s 25 now, but this sassy song is no different. It’s a good kiss-my-butt track that sums up that feeling when you and bae are on the outs, and though you want to hit them up, it’s not your fault so you hold out. JoJo’s pure alto voice allows her to flirt between pop and R&B, so this is a song that should have broad appeal.—Driadonna Rowland
Kavale “Flex”
Toronto artist Kavale paid homage to Mad Cobra with his latest single “Flex.” The Caribbean-themed song is outside the realm of Kavale’s typical songs but was done in a way that’s not cheesy or overdone. Shoot, even this track would make Rihanna and Drake want to whine. Speaking of Drake, Toronto has Caribana coming up, the city’s own Caribbean festival, so stop calling him a culture vulture…smh.—Erin Ashley Simon
E.A.S.Y., “What You Mean” Feat. Sayyi
Does E.A.S.Y.’s “What You Mean” sound like a Kanye song or is that just me? It’s not a bad thing, but definitely surprising. Despite that one observation, the chord-blasting, bass-moving production work makes you want to flip tables and shit. And after a hectic week, it sets the mood right. On top of that, Chicago’s Sayyi, whose resume includes Rihanna‘s “Woo,” and Jeremih‘s Late Nights: The Album, add an additional touch to the song. Turn up!—E.A.S.
