Comedian/actress Leslie Jones quit Twitter last night (July 18) after receiving racist abuse from many of its users following the success of her new film, the Ghostbusters remake which raked in $46 million this weekend.
Jones, of Top Five and “Saturday Night Live” fame too, found herself the subject of scrutiny and hateful speech and, after sharing her very emotional response and exposing a few of the most vitriolic messages she received (see those below)—one called her a coon, another claimed she was the source of AIDS, many compared her to monkeys—she tearfully left the social media network.
She admitted to being “naive” to racism, asked her followers to stand up to the ignorant people in their lives, called out Twitter for not having stricter guidelines, and described the incident as her “personal hell.”
Here are some of the tweets Jones had received.
