Snoop Dogg is not happy with the four-part Roots remake that premiered on the History Channel on Monday night. And he took to Instagram to express his distaste.
The film is a reworking of the 1977 series originally based on Alex Haley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, and though it featured fellow lyricist T.I. and boasts a soundtrack executive-produced by Questlove, Snoop is still calling for its boycott.
He posted an expletive-filled video on the social-sharing network, saying:
“No disrespect, but I can’t watch no motherf—king more black movies where ni—as get dogged down. 12 Years a Slave, Roots, Underground: I can’t watch none of that shit. I’m sick of this shit. How the f—k are they going to put Roots on, on Memorial Day? They going to just to keep beating that shit into our heads about how they did us, huh? I don’t understand America; they just wanna keep showing the abuse that we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago, but guess what? We’re taking the same abuse. Think about that part. When are y’all gonna make a motherf—king series about the success that black folks is having? The only success we have is Roots and 12 Years a Slave and shit like that, huh? F—k ya’ll. I ain’t watching that shit. I advise you motherf—kers that’s real ni—as like myself, f—k them television shows, create our own shit based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what’s real. F—k that old shit.”
