On Coloring Book, Chance the Rapper raps “I don’t make songs for free, I make ’em for freedom.” As a fitting line that just so happens to signify the resounding impact of his independent hustle, Chance’s verse also mirrors his moves going forward.

Last week, the “Angels” rapper released his star-studded third project to mainly positive reviews. Featuring guest appearances from Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Future, and Lil Wayne, the project dropped exclusively on iTunes/Apple Music via a rare agreement that allows it to stream for free on the service for three weeks. While free downloads aren’t counted toward album sales on the Billboard charts and SoundScan, according to HITS Double Daily the rules could change for Lil Chano.

Considering the Billboard makeover that now incorporates streams, Chance’s Coloring Book is projected to move 40-50k, which is enough to give it a top 10 bow on the chart. As you might recall, back in April, Kanye West received similar honor when The Life of Pablo debuted at No. 1 on Billboard, comprised of mostly streaming numbers. Chano follows ‘Ye with his own feat, only this time the sales are strictly off streaming (TLOP was available for purchase on Kanye’s website). All in all, this is an historic moment — hence the line mentioned above.
