Kaytranada has been teasing his new 99.9% album for some time now. Between song premieres like “195” and “Bus Ride,” not to mention sharing his story with the world via editorials like last month’s issue of Fader, the Montreal beatsmith is ready for the world now that his debut album has arrived.
Adding to this weekend’s batch of you-need-to-hear music, Kaytranada melts minds and genres on his latest sonic explosion.
Featuring 15 tracks, the producer links up with a unique crop of collaborators that includes the likes of Anderson .Paak, Syd Tha Kyd, and Craig David (Yes, the Craig David), all while diving in a pool of different sounds. The latter guest star sounds better than ever on the album standout “Got It Good,” which finds the producer tying together strands of R&B and funk with a string of house. As another favorite, “Breakdance Lesson N.1,” elements of disco and dance are interspersed into a new groove that is infectious enough to get you on the dance floor for something like this…
All of 99.9‘s featured guests, also including AlunaGeorge, GoldLink, Vic Mensa, Little Dragon, Phonte, River Tiber and Shay Lia, serve as KAY’s muse as he bounces dazzling sounds off each of their unique harmonies — or in Vic Mensa’s case on “Drive Me Crazy”, energy. Taking a leap from SoundCloud wizard, his former tag, to musician extraordinaire, KAY serves up a melodic soundtrack that should warrant plenty of playbacks for the summer, the fall, next winter, the spring after that, and beyond. But don’t take our word for it, hit play above.
