Prince was a global superstar who impacted culture over four decades through his indelible catalog of music and and extraordinary musical talent. His star came of age during the MTV era and so his fashion sense, from his high heels and androgynous appeal to his hair styles and wild outfits, were as much a part of who he was as his compositions. Here, REVOLT compiled a gallery highlighting his Purple Highness through the years.

1978

Prince released his debut album, For You, in 1978 and his first project was noted for its music and also the credits: he secured creative freedom to produce the set, a rarity for a new act.

1979

A year later, Prince released his eponymous sophomore LP, Prince, and found more success. His look (above) began to evolve as he adopted straightened hair and started to dress more dynamic.

1980

The cover of his third album, Dirty Minds, which transformed him from a romantic to an erotic sex symbol.

1984

The Purple Rain era was his most dynamic in terms of fashion and music. These years are when he became one of the most widely-revered musical talents ever.

1990

The Graffitti Bridge era found a more masculine Prince, with flowing tresses and a shaped beard.

1995

His almost yearly output continued in the ’90s and his sexual proclivities remained in tact.

2000

By the early aughts, Prince’s wore more ornate fashions and jewelry.

2005

Prince defied the aging process, here, in 2005, he looked as youthful as he did in the ’80s.

2010

Prince wore his living legend status well.

2015

Toward the end of his life, he embraced more Black Power looks, including afros, dashikis and homemade decorative pieces.
