Kanye West released The Life Of Pablo and told his fans the album was a living project that would continue to be updated. Well, he wasn’t kidding. First he claimed the album was for sale on his website after his Saturday Night Live performance before he made the album a Tidal-only exclusive. Then, after vowing the album would never be on Apple Music, he relented and his album arrived on all streaming platforms.

But, still, to earn a no. 1 album on the Billboard 200 charts primarily via streaming and a small amount of sales (28,000) by way of KanyeWest.com and Tidal.com is no small feat.

In fact, it was history.

Kanye West becomes the first artist to land a no. 1 LP largely powered by streaming-equivalent album sales. It’s worth noting, digital single sales were not made available for this project. West broke the record, which as just set three weeks ago by Rihanna and her Anti release, another Tidal exclusive that later landed atop the charts after a confusing launch.
