“OutKast would not be OutKast…“

Not one eye was dry inside Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater on Tuesday night (April 5), as friends and family gathered in remembrance for the late Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor.

Kanye West, D’Angelo, Chuck D, KRS-One and many more paid their respects to the co-founder of Tribe Called Quest, including group mates Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, who closed out the unforgettable four-hour procession.

Among the night’s emphatic moments, from D’Angelo and The Roots’s rousing rendition of “You Got A Friend” to Kanye’s touching words on Tribe Called Quest’s influence on his life, was André 3000’s tearful reveal that OutKast and ATCQ had plans of recording a collaborative album.

“About a year or two ago maybe, we were talking about doing a Tribe Called Quest and OutKast album,” he said. Fighting back tears, the “Roses” rapper later continued, “And for whatever reason, it did not happen but I don’t want the time to go by. Please people, don’t let the time go by because you never know and that’s one of the biggest things that I regret now.”

The reveal is certainly bittersweet, considering the legacy amongst the two revered groups and the many times they get compared to one another. “Tribe, they meant everything to me,” Dre said. “They are everything.”
