Bio: Kayla Brianna is endearingly sweet. She’s the kind of nice young woman that everyone loves to be around. “She came from a good family. That girl was raised right,” is the kind of thing you hear after Kayla’s made her first impression. And that’s expected. She is a good girl. But this 21-year-old stunning R&B/pop starlet has a secret. It’s filled with angst, yearning, attitude, beauty, swagger and soul and is captured best in her music. And it will all come to life when her EP is released later this year. But for the record, she was raised well too—a fact that is evident to anyone with a television.
Kayla Brianna has captured the hearts of millions of viewers as the daughter of NBA icon and legend Kenny “The Jet” Smith on the hit-reality show Meet The Smiths, on the TBS network. However, long before the television show, Kayla’s undeniable music talent had been discovered.
Throughout her life, Kayla studied craft-masters Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Brandy and Janet Jackson, eventually discovering her own fused sound of R&B, pop, hip-hop and soul. By the time she was old enough to spend quality time in the studio, she began working with acclaimed vocal producer “Sauce” (Ariana Grande, Will Smith, En Vogue). After recording a few demos, Kayla was discovered by music executive Vincent Herbert who played her music for industry icon Ron Fair, the veteran A&R executive, music producer and engineer who’s credits include Christina Aguilera, Black Eyed Peas and Mary J. Blige. Fair quickly signed Kayla Brianna to Interscope Records.
There she released her debut single, “I Got That,” which also featured rap impresario Meek Mill. However, the relationship was short-lived. After a shake-up at Interscope Records, Fair would depart the legendary record company and Kayla’s departure followed soon thereafter. “It was a good learning experience. I found out stuff about myself as an artist. I know what my sound is now and what I want in my music,” Kayla recalls with an ever-present positive attitude. But she’s right. Now, she’s in charge and has full control over her career.
