Artists make music for different reasons. Some long for radio gratification or as an expression of their art through performing and connecting with fans, while others see it as their only way out. For 24-year-old multidisciplinary artist Kilo Kish, her music drives her to freedom and a sense of validity to who she aspires to be.

“My dream for my art is to really be as free as I can be,” the singer/rapper tells Elle. “I’m inching toward 100 percent freedom without any worry about what’s said or done. I just want to be as open as I can be.”

After moving her dream from her hometown of New York to Los Angeles two years ago, Kish has since deleted her social media and put the finishing touches on her latest album Reflections In Real Time. The follow-up to 2014’s acclaimed Across EP, the record is a mix of futuristic R&B sounds, upbeat pop, jazz and electronica. The project also features a tracklist that reads like a Psych 101 syllabus: from “distractions I. the opposite sex” and “distractions II. the dilemma of cool” to “existential crisis hour!”

Released under her own imprint, Kisha Soundscpae + Audio, the album has a run-down of 20 tracks with only one guest appearance coming from John Anderson.
