Despite Kendrick Lamar’s rack up at last night’s Grammys and Taylor Swift’s second year of snagging Album of the Year, there were a few hiccups in the flow of the scheduled award show. Not only did CBS’s live-streaming and Rihanna’s last minute cancellation take an unexpected turn, as evidenced by rehearsal photos, Lauryn Hill was also supposed to appear with the Weeknd for a surprise performance to his hit-single “In The Night.” Now, released in a statement provided by Vox, the iconic singer pulled out claiming that she was busy and didn’t have much time to prepare.
Read the full statement below:
“The Grammy’s announced a performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill prematurely and without approval. Ms. Hill had concerts all weekend, leaving no time to prepare, and was uncertain she would even be able to make it to LA in time to rehearse for the event. Any performance that could have happened was never confirmed, and should not have been advertised as such. Ms. Hill was invited to do a collaboration with an artist she appreciates. The performance was intended to be a surprise and unfortunately due to its last minute nature, was unable to come to fruition.”
In an updated statement from Billboard, Hill “showed up during rehearsals, but arrived too late for the performance.”
Just the thought of Abel and Lauryn sharing the stage, is enough to hope they move forward with future projects and possibly a record in the near future.
