Diversity reigned supreme at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night (January 30) as Idris Elba scored multiple wins and Queen Latifah and Viola Davis each earned trophies.

It was a stark contrast to the #OscarsSoWhite social media blitz that’s been vocal about the Academy Awards nominees in major acting categories omitting black actors.

Elba has been praised for his role in “Beasts of No Nation” and he took top honors in the best supporting category for his performance. The British actor also snagged a win for “Luther,” where he plays a troubled but gifted detective.

In the Outstanding Actress category for a television movie or mini-series, Latifah took top honors besting a competitive field, including Nicole Kidman and Susan Sarandon.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series went to Viola Davis and her star turn as Annalise Keating in How To Get Away With Murder.

Orange Is The New Black’s Uzo Aduba also earned a win in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series

Earlier this week, President Barack Obama weighed in on the Oscar issue asking “Are we making sure that everybody is getting a fair shot?

And are executives in Hollywood doing enough to “look for talent and provide opportunity to everybody.”
