Iggy Azalea has had a year of high’s-and-low’s, or rather, shine-and-shade. If she wasn’t topping the charts with one single after another off her debut album The New Classic, she was most likely defending her music, relationship, and status with Grand Hustle. And just when we thought the Iggy-shots for the year had come to an end, Erykah Badu fires off.
Hosting this year’s Soul Train Awards, the neo-soulstress opened her monologue with a few jokes at the rappers expense. “As you know, I am the queen of neo soul and people say I have this common effect on rappers: that I make them change gods and wear crochet hats, shoulder pads,” said Badu. “So they have banned me from all of the hip-hop awards with a sign saying ‘Erykah Badu, leave our rappers alone.’”
After continuing the opening by pretending to receive phone calls, perhaps to fall in suit with her recent release But You Can’t Use My Phone mixtape, she turns away calls from Andre 3000 and Young Thug before Iggy makes her hotline bling.
“Iggy Azalea?,” she said. “Oh, you can come because what you’re doing is definitely not rap.”
Ouch. What can you even say to the fairy-godmother of Soul? Apparently nothing, as Iggy has yet to respond, which is probably the best in her favor. But leave it to Twitter to meme and join in.
