Is a Coachella competitor coming east? Maybe. According to the New York Post, Madison Square Garden has filed paperwork to explore hosting a three-day music festival at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens next summer.

MSG’s proposal is seeking to hold the festival on Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26. Included in the festivities is a free Queens community celebration tentatively set for Saturday, June 18.

The move appears to be a strike against AEG, the powerful promotion conglomerate that operates Coachella , among many other festival properties.

Just in September, AEG proposed the Panorama Music Festival, a Coachella-style three-day event to also take place June 2016 in Queens. But considering its previous NYC Festival history with All Points West (which only lasted two years), maybe its best MSG takes the lead on this one.

“As a New York company, we are ideally suited to produce a successful festival in Queens that not only celebrates the very best in music but also provides tangible, long-term benefits to the local community in a way no one else can,” said David O’Connor, president and chief executive officer, The Madison Square Garden Company.

Governors Ball, which has also taken place in June for the last five years is only eight miles away on Randall’s Island Park and has petitioned the mayor’s office to reject AEG’s proposal.
