BROOKLYN, NY—That’s a wrap! Day 2 of AfroPunk came to a close yesterday (August 24) in the bustling borough that is Brooklyn. Lenny Kravitz illuminated the green stage late last night with his first performance in King’s County in over 20 years. At the same time, Kaytranada rocked the crowd to electronic beats of hip-hop classics, including a remix of Missy Elliott’s hit song “Sock It 2 Me” featuring Da Brat over on the red stage.
AfroPunk was like a big backyard party celebrating the evolution of the afro experience and culture. Blankets covered the appearance of the ground by the gold stage as fans enjoyed food options from various multicultural vendors, which gave guest a taste of the Caribbean, Cambodia and the Philippines.
Among the crowd favorites were alternative R&B artist and songwriter Kelela who performed songs from her 2013 released mixtape, Cut For Me. Kelela’s music is inspired by her background in jazz music and bass heavy R&B along with working with producers like Jam City and Nguzunguzu for her 2013 single, “Bank Head.” The ATLien, Raury, turned heads performing his latest release Devil’s Whisper along with tracks from the 2015 release of Indigo Child and collaborations with SBTRKT.
AfroPunk has been deemed a success and, by the looks of certain changes, like priced tickets, and a Lenny Kravitz “concert,” we should have alot to look forward to in the years to come.
