The Biden administration has temporarily suspended the use of horse patrols against Haitian refugees in Del Rio, Texas.
On Thursday (Sept. 23), a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official announced the news to reporters, after disturbing images surfaced of horse patrols using whips to keep Haitian migrants from entering the United States. “We have ceased the use of the horse patrol in Del Rio temporarily. We’ll prioritize other methods for identifying individuals who might be in medical distress,” the spokesperson said. No further details were provided.
Earlier this week, DHS announced that they would investigate the situation to “define the appropriate disciplinary actions [that need] to be taken.” The department also dispatched extra agents to oversee what was going on at the Texas border.
As REVOLT previously reported, thousands of people left Haiti in hopes of fleeing damage from the country’s catastrophic earthquake and political violence in the wake of the assassination of Former President Jovenel Moïse.
The refugees constructed makeshift camps at the border, in hopes that they could obtain entry into the U.S., but more than 3,300 people have been turned away from Del Rio since Sept. 17. At one point, over 12,000 migrants were lodging at the border.
Several people have spoken out about the mistreatment of the Haitian people, including Chris Brown, who took to his Instagram Stories to bring awareness to the situation.
“I hope everyone is seeing what is happening with the people of Haiti at the border!!!!!!!!!” the “Go Crazy” singer wrote. “All the fucking billionaires in that state alone should be trying to help. We have no peaceful strategies. Hurding us up like cattle farmers… Hey everyone… Please take a fucking look at what’s going on!! Please!!!??????”
Congresswoman Maxine Waters said the treatment the Haitian people are currently receiving at the border is “worse than what we witnessed in slavery.”
“I’m pissed. I’m unhappy and I’m not just unhappy with the cowboys, who were running down Haitians and using their reins to whip them,” she said. “I’m unhappy with the administration.”
