If the year 2020 taught us anything, it’s that there is still much work that needs to be done to combat racism. Not only are Black people still experiencing it while walking down the street in their everyday lives, but children suffer from this, as well. Video that recently surfaced of a girl’s high school basketball game in Washington state proves this — though we already knew.
A high school basketball game in Connell, Washington turned vile when white students watching from the bleachers shouted out racist remarks to two Black girls, who were sisters, on the opposing team as they tried to make baskets. From screaming “monkeys” at the young athletes to making monkey sounds and even gestures, the students in the bleachers chastised the Black girls until their coach stepped in.
Once the coach, Brandie Valadez, realized what was happening, she yelled, “That is very racist. That is racist.” According to NBC Right Now, she then quickly brought this behavior to the Connell athletic director’s attention. Jim Jacobs, the superintendent of N-F-S-D, later said, “The athletic director directed the students to stop the behavior and then put himself in a position near the students to monitor their behavior.”
Moreover, Doug Burge, the superintendent of the Zillah School District, where the Black students were from, confirmed that an investigation into the event is taking place. “In Zillah School District, we value diversity and strive to create schools and environments that are both physically safe and emotionally nurturing for our students. We take these allegations very seriously and are committed to aiding in Connell School District’s investigation to the best of our abilities,” he said.
Take a look at the short but shocking video of white students several shouting racist remarks and making monkey movements to the opposing team’s Black players.
Video evidence has surfaced. You all be the judge of this one.
