President Joe Biden addressed the killing of Daunte Wright during a recent speech. On Monday (April 12), POTUS said the incident was tragic but asked American citizens to wait for the results of an investigation before coming to a conclusion.

“It’s really a tragic thing that happened, but I think we’ve got to wait and see what the investigation shows — the entire investigation,” said Biden. “You’ve all watched, I assume…,the film, which is really the body cam, which is fairly graphic. Question is — ‘Was it an accident? Was it intentional?’ That remains to be determined by a full-blown investigation.”

According to Wright’s mother, her son was killed by Brooklyn Center police who pulled him over on Sunday (April 11) because of the air fresheners in his vehicle. He exited the car, but after cops attempted to take him into custody for outstanding warrants, he got back in and was shot by an officer who intended on using her taser. His vehicle traveled for several more blocks eventually hitting another car, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Wright’s death has sparked protests in Minnesota, prompting the deployment of the National Guard. Biden has also urged demonstrators to refrain from resorting to violence.

“But in the meantime, I want to make it clear again, there is absolutely no justification — none — for looting,” he said. “No justification for violence. Peaceful protest — understandable. And the fact is that, you know, we do know that the anger, pain and trauma that exists in the Black community in that environment is real. It’s serious, and it’s consequential. But it will not justify violence and/or looting.”

“In the meantime, I’m calling for peace and calm,” the president continued. “And we should listen to Daunte’s mom, who is calling for peace and calm.” Biden hasn’t yet spoken to Wright’s mother, but he said that his “prayers are with their family.”
