The city of Yonkers will honor its native son DMX with an undetermined memorial, TMZ reports. X passed away Friday (April 9) after suffering a heart attack, and remaining on life support for nearly a week. The mayor of the multi-platinum rapper’s hometown, Mike Spano, mentioned to the celebrity site the memorial will be a “lasting gesture” and could come in the form of a street name, statue or mural.

Mayor Spano has also reportedly recommended hosting DMX’s memorial service at Yonkers Raceway. The outdoor venue with an on-site casino is the city’s largest event space. It has a seating capacity of 7,500 but due to coronavirus restrictions only 20% of that amount of guests would be allowed to enter. According to Spano, it’s an appropriate setting for one of the area’s most famous residents to be commemorated.

In 2017, the late rapper participated in a turkey handout with the Yonkers Police Athletic League. Mayor Spano attended the event as well.

“Today our city mourns the loss of a musical icon, someone who wore their heart on their sleeve and at every opportunity gave back to Yonkers — the city he loved,” Spano tweeted. “Earl Simmons, or as we know him, DMX, was a man of exceptional talent. His spirit will live on in the power of his music and leave a lasting impact on his tremendous following.”

X was born Earl Simmons in Mount Vernon, NY but grew up in Yonkers. His rough upbringing was rooted in the School Street projects. The neighborhood shaped X as he spent many nights in the streets, often with stray dogs he befriended. Yonkers was where Dark Man X made a name for himself and he never seemed to forget where he came from.

Following the somber news that he had passed away, cars in Yonkers blasted his music along the streets, News 12 reports. Community members also traveled about a dozen miles away to White Plains to bring flowers, cards, light candles, and pay their respects to the legendary rapper.
