According to the police chief of Hamilton, Georgia, slavery met the needs of Black people.

On Sunday (Jan. 31), TMZ published a video of Hamilton Police Chief Gene Allmond having a racist conversation with police officer John Brooks. During their exchange, both Allmond and Brooks casually drop the n-word, disrespect Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Stacey Abrams, and claim that Black people were “furnished” during slavery.

The video stems from Brooks’ own body cam, which he didn’t know was still recording during the duration of their conversation. After discussing their thoughts on the public’s opinion of their use of excessive force, Brooks and Allmond discuss who they’d rather have sex with: Bottoms or Abrams.

Later on in the video, Allmond and Brooks discuss their thoughts on how Black people were treated during the era of slavery.

“It seemed to me like they furnished them a house to live in,” Allmond said. “They furnished them clothes to put on their back. They furnished them food to put on their table and all they had to do was fucking work.” Brooks then adds, “And now we give ‘em all those things and don’t have to fucking work.”

The conversation apparently happened a year before a Black Lives Matter protest was set to happen. After WTVM TV in Columbus, Georgia got ahold of the tape, Allmond resigned from his post, and Brooks was fired from his position.

Former police chief Allmond isn’t the first high-ranking police officer to resign over racist or dangerous commentary. Back in November, an Arkansas police chief had resigned after he made threats to Democrats on the social media app Parler, which is catered to far-right extremists and conspiracy theorists. Chief Lang Holland’s comments, which called for the hanging of top Democrats like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, led to his swift resignation.
