Sen. Kamala Harris met with Jacob Blake’s family in Wisconsin on Monday (Sept. 7) in what marked her first solo campaign trip since being nominated as Joe Biden’s running mate last month. Harris told reporters “they’re an incredible family,” adding they’ve endured Blake’s injuries and the nationwide attention since his police shooting with “with such dignity and grace.”

“They’re carrying the weight of a lot of voices on their shoulders,” she said.

According to reports, the vice presidential nominee said her message to Blake’s family was “to express concern for their well-being and of course for their brother and their son’s well-being. And to let them know that they have support.”

Attorney Ben Crump — who is representing Blake — wrote in a statement that Harris had an “inspirational and uplifting” one-hour visit with each family member “about how they were handling the trauma and urged them to take care of their physical and mental health.”

“In a moving moment,” Crump wrote, “Jacob Jr. told Sen. Harris that he was proud of her, and the senator told Jacob that she was also proud of him and how he is working through his pain.”

According to Crump, Sen. Harris also discussed the policy changes that she and Biden seek to enact if they are elected, including the Justice in Policing Act and implicit bias training. Crump wrote that “Jacob Jr. assured [Harris] that he was not going to give up on life for the sake of his children.” In return, the Democrat encouraged him and his family “to continue to use their voices even through their pain to help America make progress to end systemic racism.”

Blake’s family held a block party last week on the same day that President Donald Trump visited Kenosha. The event included free food, free haircuts, music, voter registration booths, Coronavirus testing and craft centers, where attendees could write encouraging notes to the 29-year-old.
