The sports world is continuing to rally in support of Jacob Blake and the fight against racial injustices and police brutality.
After the Milwaukee Bucks announced they were boycotting Wednesday (Aug. 26) night’s playoff game against the Orlando Magic, the NBA, the MLB and other major sports leagues decided to join in and make a statement.
The NHL is the latest to cancel their scheduled games.
According to ESPN, the New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers game and the Vegas Golden Knights vs. Vancouver Canucks matchup will not be played. Friday’s games will be postponed as well.
The NHL’s decision to sit out of a few matchups comes after the hockey organization continued on with their games on Wednesday night. They were the only major sports league that didn’t show some form of protest and went on their schedule as planned.
As ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported, the NHL wasn’t going to cancel any of their games, but the players spoke up through a conversation with The Hockey Diversity Alliance, a group with the intention “to eradicate racism and intolerance in hockey.”
The Hockey Diversity Alliance had also asked, via Evander Kanes’ Twitter account, that the hockey organization put an end to the playoff games as it would be “a clear message that human rights take priority over sports.”
Minnesota Wilds Matt Dumba, a member of the alliance, expressed his disappointment with the league and their tardiness in making a statement regarding such an important topic.
“The NHL is always late to the party, especially on these topics, so it’s sorta sad and disheartening for me and other members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, and I’m sure other guys across the league,” he said in interview with Vancouver’s Sportsnet 650 on Wednesday.
“But if no one stands up and does anything, it’s the same thing — it’s just that silence that you’re just outside looking in on actually being leaders and invoking real change when you have such an opportunity to do so.”
