Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp is donating over $1.75 million to Black and brown communities to help fight the spread of COVID-19 and help those who are currently behind bars, according to TMZ.

Kaep’s charity will send approximately $800,000 in grants to 13 groups in communities that are “disproportionately” affected by the pandemic. They have also teamed up with Impossible Foods to help families who have experienced “food insecurity” since the pandemic began.

Additionally, the Know Your Rights Camp will provide help covering legal funds for those who have been arrested during protests following the death of George Floyd. Over $200,000 will be dedicated to various groups in Atlanta, Detroit and Miami to cover bail funds.

“Know Your Rights Camp is proud of the breadth and depth of our community impact during these difficult times,” an organization spokesperson said in a statement to TMZ. “We look forward to the partnerships created through the initiatives having both a significant immediate and long term impact. Our efforts to become deeply entrenched in communities and with organizational partners has ensured our ability to maximize the impact on the lives of people living in communities we serve.”

Back in May, Kaepernick announced that his charity would cover legal fees for those who were arrested during the Black Lives Matter protests in Minneapolis where Floyd was killed.

“In fighting for liberation there‘s always retaliation,” he tweeted. “We must protect our Freedom Fighters. We started a legal defense initiative to give legal representation to Freedom Fighters in Minneapolis paid for by @yourrightscamp.”

After receiving a generous amount of donations, the initiative was able to expand nationwide. “Thx to your support, we’ve expanded the @yourrightscamp legal defense initiative nationally to defend arrested Freedom Fighters,” Kaepernick captioned his Instagram post. “We’re also working to file civil rights cases against police for their terroristic acts. Keep fighting back! #Wegotus.”
